Once you make your first stone axe you can get branches more easily by cutting down trees. Stone axes, mostly. Axes don't seem to have any options outside of mods. As for other renewable weapons though, Machetes (better damage and durability than an axe, less range) can be repaired near-infinitely. The hand axe and the red fire axe are for fighting zombies. Find the long handled wood axe (McCoys warehouse). This is for cutting down trees. Only takes about 3 hits per tree to down them.
