Don't forget that a 400 grain 45 caliber bullet traveling 1200 will shoot lengthwise through a buffalo. 30 grains of 5744 and a 400 gr. bullet made of anything will do the job out to 150 meters.....and if your good at estimating range, will do fine out to 500.Feb 19, 2001 · From what I can tell, Benchmarck is a little too slow to get the best velocities from a 405gr bullet. I only loaded 45-70 in my 1895 Marlin which is a strong gun and there were special loads published for the 1895 Marlin. I used both 38-42 gr of IMR 4198 and 52-55 gr of H322 behind Speer 400 gr FN. The heavy H322 loads required a lot of compression of the ball powder.

This is a BP (or a little hotter) level load. Larger 5744 doses can be used for strong actions, but I usually go with other powders for stiff loads.Luckily, most of the classic offerings came back with the new ownership including this unique loading of the 405-grain Core-Lokt bullet. According burn rate charts, some have Accurate 1680 closer to the 4227s than the 4198s, while others have it closer to the 4198s than the 4227s.
