I'm much more comfortable using a controller to play most games, and having originally played Oblivion on console makes it so much harder to get used to it on PC with keyboard and mouse. The other major difference between the two versions is the way they control; the controller support on the PC version is completely nonfunctional so you're pretty much forced to use M&KB. As long as steam recognises your controller, when selecting oblivion in big picture mode there should be options to download premade custom controller configurations then chose the one that suits you best. That said, the Northern UI mod adds controller support. I've never used it so I can't tell you how good it is, but I hear it's fine and doesn't need set up manually like a key mapper. You'll want to disable the joystick settings in the oblivion.ini file then customize your controls through X-Padder and you're away. That's what I'd do anyway.
