Scouting is the most useful skill at the beginning when you are reqgularly outclassed by stronger troops, it also gives a few movement speed buffs. You can go tactics and make it an auto resolve run, you will loose troops but it prevents enemies from retreating and at higher levels you can win unwinable fights.Keep a party of 75ish troops and at least 1 saddle horse per troop.
