I think it was increased to 350 mainly because GM's marketing wanted Olds to have a 350 to compete with the other makes of the time.From there on, the only way for additional size increases is through stroking. The 307 was a economy engine, it didn`t come any other way. It has the bore of a 283 and the stroke of a 327. It came with a large journal shaft, the same size as all the other small blocks except the 400. That`s how we do 327 builds now, throw a 307 crank in a 350 block. It`s been said the 307 can be bored .125 to make it a 4 inch bore.Now, theres a machinist over on Hotrodders.com that claims to bore 307's to 4" bore all the time, and uses standard bore 327 pistons. Hi, You aren't going to have as much flexibility in playing with the bore and stroke on a 327 because of it's design. The 327 used larger crank journals that the 283, 305, 307, or 350. The block of course is machined for this crank to fit, and other cranks won't work. The bore can only be opened up so much.from california. T-Roy said: ↑. The bore remained at 4.250 but the stroke increased from 4.00- to a hefty 4.37-inches. Unfortunately for interchange artists, GM changed nearly everything in the engine so parts compatibility ended with this 8.1L.
